Vocational Education for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (VECADA)

Vocational Education for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (VECADA) is a component of PASDO’s Climate Change Adaptation (CADA) programme aimed at tackling the socio-economic impacts of climate change in Africa, particularly loss of livelihoods and poverty.

These gully erosion and landslide activities are believed to be among the worst impacts of climate change in Africa.

Introduction

Excessive emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the past and ongoing activities of industrialized nations are contributing to the rising temperature of the Earth and causing global climate change.

Changing weather patterns, along with extreme weather events, are severely affecting agricultural production, which is the mainstay of a greater percentage of the population.

Unpredictable weather conditions continue to lead to significant crop failures and loss of investments.

Torrential rainfall and heavy floods destroy crops, causing farmers to lose their investments.

Drought and desertification keep diminishing the amount of arable land, rendering large expanse of lands unusable for farming.
Herds of cattle migrating away from the dry areas in search of green pastures end up destroying and eating up crops of farmers, causing serious losses.

Gully erosion and landslides wash away and bury farmlands and crops on a large scale.

All of these factors, among others, are causing serious loss of livelihoods, increasing unemployment and fueling widespread poverty in a continent that bears no responsibility for the climate crisis.

It is a lack of economic hope or opportunity that leads a young man to carry an AK47 and join a terrorist or bandit group.” - Tony Elumelu, African Economist.

Violent agitations, armed robbery and kidnappings are on a steady rise as jobless youths become increasingly vulnerable and get easily recruited by armed gangs.

Foreign expats are important targets for these armed gangs who kidnap the expats either for ransom or out rightly kill them as a way to vent their frustrations.
An example of such attacks is the one that killed four staff of the United States embassy in Nigeria who were on a visit to Anambra State (the gully erosion hotspot).

Unemployment and increasing poverty is seeing more youthful population toe the path of advance fee fraud and online dating scams, which are particularly targeted at high income nations where uncountable number of unsuspecting victims lose substantial amounts of money.

The joblessness and insecurity is leading millions of other young Africans to seek greener pastures in high income nations such as the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia and others, causing serious migration crisis in the host countries.

It is crucial for the global community, particularly industrialized nations, to provide the necessary assistance to help Africans cope with these climate challenges.

In the words of Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General, “supporting those suffering from the impacts of climate change is a moral, social and economic imperative”.

Africa contributes least to the climate crisis but suffers most. It is a moral, social and economic imperative to support them - Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary General.

Objective of Vocational Education for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (VECADA) Programme

The objective of the Vocational Education for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (VECADA) is to equip Africans, who have lost their livelihoods to climate change related problems, with the right vocational education and skills needed for them to start earning decent income and reintegrate back into the society.

Achieving this objective has a lot of significant benefits both locally (for Africans) and for the international community including countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and other high GDP countries.

Building An Africa Climate Change Adaptation Center

To assist those Africans whose livelihoods have been destroyed by climate change, we intend to build an African Climate Change Adaptation Center in the continent’s most populous country, Nigeria.

This adaptation center  will serve as a  vocational institute where various trades can be learnt and skills acquired.

To achieve this, we shall leverage the experience and knowledge that we have gathered over the years under our Basic Education Project (BEP), where we erected several classrooms and school buildings that have improved access to primary and junior secondary education (Basic Education).

How you Can Help

There are various ways that you can help out in the Vocational Education for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (VECADA) programme.

Below are a few of the ways:

Donate To the Vocational Education for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (VECADA)

We kindly invite you to make a donation to support the Vocational Education for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (VECADA) programme to enable us build and equip a center to achieve our objective.

All donations received will go into acquiring land and financing the construction and equipping of the center.

You may make a one-time donation, a recurring donation or a combination of both. We’d really appreciate whatever amount you donate.

You could term this as your Private Official Development Assistance, or PrivODA.
ODA (Official Development Assistance) is a term used in international development and diplomacy to describe a mechanism used by OECD countries to voluntarily donate a percentage of their national income towards helping developing countries.

To donate, please use our donation form.
