Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Africa (Nigeria)
The Challenge:
In Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria, about;
• 55 million people do not have clean water;
• 110 million do not have basic hygiene facilities, and about
• 116 million people do not have basic sanitation
• 60,000 children under the age of five die from diseases caused by access to water, sanitation and hygiene.
Says the Water Aid.
What PASDO is doing:
The main objective of PASDO’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program is to increase the percentage of people who have access to clean water, as well as improve the sanitation and hygiene conditions of the populace.
This aligns with the sixth goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure “clean water and sanitation for all”.
In achieving this, PASDO embarks on the drilling of borehole facilities in the locations where they can have the most impact.
This includes areas where residents have to trek long distances to fetch water for domestic use, areas with a lot of school children but with no source of water around, areas with one or more markets, and other strategic locations.
IMPACT
School Children:
More than 1,000 school children at Cardinal International Academy, whose school host one of our recent borehole projects, will benefit from improved access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene to keep them healthy and productive.
Markets:
Makurdi Modern Market (MMM) is the most prominent market in Benue State. It hosts an abattoir and has several stores where a a variety of goods are traded.
Just beside it is the Makurdi Village Market that deals majorly in dry and wet food stuff, including meat, vegetable, fruits, cereals, etc.
These markets, which are within very close proximity to the water facility, are served by truck pushers who get water from the borehole and supply to the markets.
Community Residents of the Makurdi Modern Market Area:
The 40,000+ residents of the Modern Market area of Makurdi can breathe a sigh of relief courtesy of the presence of the borehole water project constructed by PASDO.
Without access to municipal water supply, water shortages are common in this area especially during the dry and harmattan seasons.
